Attention Isnt a Metric. Its a Pattern

When we say something captured our attention, everyone understands what we mean.

But when we try to measure attention, we often reduce it to a single number.

Time.

Scroll depth.

Clicks.

None of those metrics truly represent attention on their own.

Someone might spend five minutes on a page because they answered a phone call.

Another person may finish reading the same article in two minutes because they were deeply focused.

The timer doesn't know the difference.

Attention isn't one signal.

It's a combination of many small behaviors.

How someone navigates.

What they choose to read next.

Whether they return.

How they interact with content over time.

Every action contributes a small piece of the picture.

No single metric tells the whole story.

But together, they begin to describe genuine engagement.

This is why understanding behavior requires looking for patterns instead of isolated events.

The real question isn't how long someone stayed.

It's what they were trying to accomplish while they were there.

That shift changes how we think about analytics entirely.
